so you want to start a paintball field

As can be understood like any business starting a paintball field can be a tricky and difficult task with many complexities.
Im not going to go into the finer detail as we offer a advisory service for that but im going to go over a few of the points to consider before you start

taking you have already done your market research and have a bit of land in mind with a plan of the types of playing areas you wish to build here is a list of things to consider that you may not have thought of.

Operations and sales area
Screening and safety
BBQ and function area
Equipment type
Security
Car parking

Operations and sales area
once upon a time it was exceptable to run a paintball field out of the back of a van with no eftpos and other services but not in this modern age. you need to consider your customers needs. your operations area needs to have adequate tidy undercover space with large counter and serving areas, power for refrigeration and other services, eftpos, consider a pos system to keep track of sales ( dont rely on a bit of paper here as some will take advantage of this and rip you off), phone and Internet ( trust me you will need it)

Screening and safety
this is the most important part to get right and believe me also the most common part not done right. consider things like you need big high netting around your playing area anywhere where your customers can approach your field or get with 50m of it. and i am not talking 2m high stuff im talking 3.5m+ even 4.8m in some cases. there are so many fields I visited as a sales rep where i was getting shot at outside the office or while walking to the office... not safe dude..
you need good rest areas where players can come off the field during the game, you also need a method to prevent guns being fired in these areas or better yet prevent the guns from entering the area. Entrances to these areas also need to be constructed so paintballs cant come off the field into them.
You need a method to prevent guns and public from occupying the same area. i have seen so many places where players freely wonder around the non playing public with live guns or guns where the barrel plugs fallout. the method of using barrel plugs is gone and all but dead unless you are one of these places that dont care about real safety so dont go down that track, simply keep the 2 apart.
When considering safety plans and procedures never rely on those off the shelf courses or generic industry plans. I have seen so many accidents that have come from places that claim to use these, the simple fact is they are limited to the scope of the person that produced them and their honesty and clarity and their only worth is to keep someone looking in from the outside with little or no knowledge happy and feeling safe. the reality is they dont necessary produce safety.
For a safe site consider joining up with other operations in a joint audit program or join a entertainment audit group and get your self a copy of what ever applicable standards you can. we can hook you up with a copy of the NZ commercial paintball operators guide.

BBQ and function area
Yes you need one, or at least a BBQ and small seated area. it is best to keep this area away from your operations area so customers having a BBQ dont get in your way and you not in theres. it is however advisable not to go overboard on making this area unless you are going down the events center track as what you will end up with is large amounts of customers trying to hold events here and drinking which will bring you a hole new level of problems and affect your profits. never attempt to add a events center or full function area to just a paintball field. all you want in your BBQ area is a place to cook a simple light BBQ and have the odd drink. no birthdays, stag dos etc. leave that to the big operations that have 50-60k to blow and other facilities to recoup the cost.

Equipment type
This is where we really come in. If you intend on making money, like your customers and are willing to spend money keeping them there is only one choice NZHPA for your air system and a good sturdy double trigger spyder type light weight marker. for masks pick something with some comfort and quality like the vforce vantage pros or vents ( remember with the pros you will also need a mask washing machine).
as one of the leading operations in NZ we can help you with this equipment. If we dont have it in stock there is a good chance we know a place you can buy i from cheaply.
Budget on spending $6000 on a air system and $400 a set for the markers.
There is of course a 2nd option for those who dont care about there customers or maybe have a market with no choice and that is tippmann like markers running co2 and cheap nasty plastic masks.you can buy a set of this gear for around $200 and $50 for the filling gear Just dont expect good safety or be in business long after someone else opens up and your customers jump ship.

Security
Protecting your investment is a must and this is where the power and Internet comes into it. First of all you need a good storage area. never use a van or truck, plywood sheds with no lining are neither adequate for your commercial licence requirements or to keep thieves out. you need a good sturdy container or concrete building fitted with a alarm and web cam that messages you when something is wrong. Another point is to integrate your storage area with your sales area and make it look good and well built. This will not only put off any would be thieves and improve sales but its also not to obvious to those in the know that your unlined plywood shed is not up to standard for you to actually be carrying the commercial licence you claim to have.

Lastly a pointer to make sure you have found the right bit of land. never put a paintball field next to a property boundary, rail way line, public road, large waterway or a house. dont use a right of way or drive that runs past a neighboring house other wise they can shut you down in a heartbeat.
